3D Printing & Guidelines
About
Using the following guidelines, patrons may create three-dimensional objects in plastic using a design uploaded from a digital computer file. 3D printing is available to all registered Library patrons in good standing.
General Guidelines
1. Patrons must have a current library account in good standing in order to submit designs.
2. Library staff will handle print requests on a first come, first served basis.
3. Only trained library staff will operate 3D printers. Patrons are not permitted to operate, calibrate, or otherwise manipulate equipment.
4. The Library does not accept responsibility if the project does not print properly or does not work.
5. Patrons are limited to one STL file per week.
6. 3D printing at the Library is currently free, due to funding provided by OSD.
7. Print times are estimates and cannot be guaranteed.
8. Patrons are responsible for cleanup of the final print. Small bumps, holes, or rough edges may be finished with fine sand paper or other tools.
9. Printed designs that are not picked up within 7 days of notification will become property of the Library.
Design Guidelines
1. It is the responsibility of the requesting patron to design their own creation. Digital designs are available from various file-sharing databases such as www.thingiverse.com or www.tinkercad.com, although any 3D drafting software may be used.
2. All designs MUST be submitted in .STL format.
3. The Library’s 3D printer may be used only for lawful purposes. 3D printers may not be used to create material that is:
- Prohibited by federal law.
- Deemed unsafe, harmful, or dangerous.
- Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment.
- Subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
- Intended for business or commercial purposes.
4. Designs must be applicable for printing with ABS or PLA filament.
- ABS filament is available in Black, White, Red, Blue, Silver, or Green.
- PLA filament is available in Black, White, Red, Silver, Green, Clear, Magenta, Orange, and Blue.
5. The file size must be no larger than 25MB. Maximum build volume is: 215 x 215 x 300 mm for single extrusion or 197 x 215 x 300 mm for dual extrusion.
6. 10 hour limit on printing times. Please download Ultimaker Cura: Powerful, easy-to-use 3D printing software to estimate your build time.
7. The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request and all submissions will be reviewed before printing.
Submission Procedure
Prior to sending your submission, please read through all of the above guidelines.
To Submit a design, send an email to the Library (Iwakuni.Library@usmc-mccs.org) with yourfirstname.yourlastname.3DPRINT in the subject heading and your design attached. Within the body of your email, you must include:
- Your library card number, email address, and phone number.
- A brief description of your design and the name of your .STL file.
- Your desired filament and design color.
- Estimated build time.
Once your submission is received, a response email will be sent confirming or denying your request and an estimated print time within 1-3 days will be provided. The Library will notify you when your print is ready and you will have 7 days to pick up your design.
